USES:
This compound is used to manufacture polyurethane foams used in furniture,
packaging, insulation and boat building, to manufacture polyurethane coatings
used on leather, wire, tank linings and masonry, and to manufacture other elas-
tomers used in adhesives, films, linings, abrasive wheels and other mechanical
items.

COMMENTS:
This compound is a mixture of the 2,4- isomer (89.3%) and the 2,6- isomer
(10.7%). There are no important recognized toxicological distinctions between
the 2,4- and the 2,6- isomers. Most information for this compound, including
THR and ACGIH data, is taken from data on the 2,4- isomer.





HANDLING PROCEDURES





ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS:
This chemical is highly toxic by inhalation and ingestion [026,036,
269]. It is also highly toxic by skin contact [026]. It is an irritant
of the skin, eyes, mucous membranes and respiratory tract [058,269,421].
It is also a lacrimator [052,269,275,421]. When heated to decomposition
it emits very toxic fumes of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen
cyanide and nitrogen oxides [058,269].

MINIMUM PROTECTIVE CLOTHING:
If Tyvek-type disposable protective clothing is not worn during
handling of this chemical, wear disposable Tyvek-type sleeves taped to
your gloves.

The permeation test results for the neat (undiluted) chemical are given
below. The breakthrough times of this chemical are given for each glove type

RECOMMENDED RESPIRATOR:
Where the neat test chemical is weighed and diluted, wear a NIOSH-
approved half face respirator equipped with a combination filter cartridge,
i.e. organic vapor/acid gas/HEPA (specific for organic vapors, HCl, acid
gas, SO2 and a high efficiency particulate filter).
Splash proof safety goggles should be worn while handling this
chemical. Alternatively, a full face respirator, equipped as above,
may be used to provide simultaneous eye and respiratory protection.

STORAGE PRECAUTIONS:
You should protect this chemical from exposure to light. Keep
the container tightly closed under an inert atmosphere, and store
under refrigerated temperatures.

SPILLS AND LEAKAGE:
If you should spill this chemical, FIRST REMOVE ALL SOURCES OF IGNITION,
then use absorbent paper to pick up all liquid spill material. Your contamina-
ted clothing and absorbent paper should be sealed in a vapor-tight plastic bag
for eventual disposal. Solvent wash all contaminated surfaces with acetone
followed by washing with a soap and water solution. Do not reenter the
contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has
verified that the area has been properly cleaned.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES





SKIN CONTACT:
IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating
all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly
with soap and water.
IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center even if no symptoms
(such as redness or irritation) develop.
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital for treatment after
washing the affected areas.

INHALATION:
IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air.
IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a
hospital even if no symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath,
or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop.
Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown
atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or
equal to that advised under Respirator Recommendation.

EYE CONTACT:
First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush
victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while
simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center.
Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without
specific instructions from a physician.
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if
no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.

INGESTION:
DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Corrosive chemicals will destroy the membranes
of the mouth, throat, and esophagus and, in addition, have a high risk of
being aspirated into the victim's lungs during vomiting which increases the
medical problems.
If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of
water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control
center. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital.
If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth,
ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with
the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Transport the victim
IMMEDIATELY to a hospital.

SYMPTOMS:
Symptoms of exposure to this compound may include irritation of the
skin, eyes and respiratory system [036,151,346,371]. It may cause bronchial
asthma [031,052,058,151]. It may also cause bronchitis and pulmonary edema
[058,346,371,421]. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting and abdominal
pain [058,346,421]. Exposure may cause an asthmatic reaction with wheezing,
dyspnea and cough [058,269,346,421]. Some decrease in lung function in the
absence of symptoms has been observed after long periods of exposure [058,
346,371]. Eosinophilia has been reported [052,151]. It may cause sore throat,
runny nose, diarrhea and bronchial spasm. High concentrations are destructive
to tissues of the skin, eyes, mucous membranes, upper respiratory tract and
digestive tract. Chemical or hypersensitive pneumonia may occur with flu-like
symptoms (e.g. fever, chills) [058]. Irritation of the lungs may occur [371].
Exposure may also cause laryngitis, shortness of breath and headache [269].
Chest discomfort, including tightness and congestion, occurs [058,421]. Insom-
nia has occured [421]. Death may result if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed
through the skin [269].
Skin contact may result in severe dermatitis [043,036,052]. If the liquid
is allowed to remain in contact with the skin, it may produce redness, swell-
ing and blistering [058,346]. It may also cause rashes and scaling. Skin
sensitization can occur [058]. Allergic eczema may also occur [031].
Eye contact may cause severe irritation resulting in permanent damage
if left untreated [058,346]. It may cause keratitis and conjunctivitis [099].
Eye contact may also cause lacrimation, smarting, burning and a prickling sen-
sation [421].
Ingestion may cause burns of the mouth and stomach [346]. It may also
have a corrosive effect on the stomach and esophagus [052,058]. Gastrointes-
tinal irritation may occur [151].
Medical conditions aggravated by exposure to this compound include asthma,
bronchitis, emphysema, bronchial hyperactivity, skin allergies and eczema
[058].
